Ver is facing charges of evading $48 million in taxes by hiding $240 million from the sale of Bitcoin in 2017. He believes that the charges are politically motivated and related to his promotion of Bitcoin. Elon Musk initially showed interest in a potential pardon for Ver, but later reversed his stance, citing Ver's renouncement of US citizenship as a hindrance to receiving any support. The odds of Trump granting clemency to Ver have dropped to 12% on the prediction platform Polymarket. Despite this, Ver has received support from Twitter users who argue that his renouncement of citizenship was to protect himself from political persecution and imprisonment. In December, Ver requested a US court to dismiss the tax evasion charges against him.
