A digital art piece titled "Ascend," inscribed on Bitcoin's Ordinals protocol, has been sold for $57,450 at Christie's Post-War and Contemporary Art Day auction. The artwork, created by Ryan Koopmans and Alice Wexell, surpassed its low estimate of $39,000. This is the first time a Bitcoin Ordinal has been featured in a live auction at Christie's. The piece captures the revitalized Iveria Sanatorium in Tskaltubo, Georgia. Christie's manager of Digital Art Sales, Sebastian Sanchez, explained that Bitcoin Ordinals differ from NFTs on Ethereum and provide an extra layer of protection by attaching images and videos directly to individual Satoshis. Sanchez believes that Ordinals have a "steeper learning curve" compared to NFTs and are therefore more challenging to introduce to the mainstream art community.
