The Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA) has launched the Blockchain Zone in collaboration with Unified Patents to protect blockchain developers from patent trolls. Non-practicing enterprises (NPEs), who own patents but don't actively use them, often force businesses to settle by using the expensive litigation process. COPA's Blockchain Zone aims to curb NPE behavior by working with over 300 other firms to shield blockchain technology from frivolous lawsuits. COPA will provide pass-through protection to its members at no additional cost to further protect blockchain-related businesses from expensive legal disputes. Unified Patents has a successful history of challenging copyright claims, and the new project is expected to do the same for blockchain technology.
