Blockchain security investigator Tay has revealed a social engineering scheme targeting individuals in the cryptocurrency industry. Threat actors posing as job recruiters from well-known crypto companies such as Kraken, Mexc, Gemini, and Meta contact industry workers through platforms like Linkedin and Telegram, offering high-paying job opportunities. After engaging in conversation, potential victims are directed to a video interviewing site and prompted to install updates that grant attackers access to their PC. This new attack method is similar to the one used by Korean threat actors in the $308 million DMM exchange breach. Tay warns industry workers to be cautious during job-hunting tasks.
