United States President Joe Biden rejected Japan's Nippon Steel takeover deal with US steel due to national security and supply chain concerns. This decision has caused tension between the two countries, with Japan questioning how the US treated one of its most vital allies. It was revealed that Biden's staff accidentally copied and pasted sections of a previous executive order on a Chinese crypto mining company onto the Nippon Steel directive. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States panel found no security risks associated with the Nippon deal, leading to claims that the opposition stemmed from the US Trade Representative. Both US Steel and Nippon Steel plan to sue the US government, with Nippon Steel still required to pay a $56 million breakup fee.
