Verkle Trees Vs STARKs: Which of the 2 ultimate routes to Ethereum stateless validation is better?

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has proposed two solutions, Verkle trees and STARKs, for achieving stateless validation to address the growing data storage and verification needs of the Ethereum network. Verkle trees would allow for the generation of compact proofs to reduce the need for storing the entire state, while STARKs offer smaller proof sizes but require more computational power. Buterin also suggests lattice-based Merkle trees as a quantum-safe alternative and multidimensional gas to bridge the efficiency gap. However, there are trade-offs in terms of security, efficiency, and implementation complexity for each approach. The implementation of stateless validation would simplify node setup and improve scalability and decentralization, but further work and analysis are needed to address the challenges and optimize the system.
