US authorities seize Bitcoin mining ASICs over unapproved AI chips
US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has seized Bitcoin mining ASICs at US ports, expanding the crackdown to include machines from MicroBT and Canaan after Bitmain's models were stopped last year. The seizures were made because the units contained AI chips from Sophgo, a chip firm facing trade limitations. CBP has also seized additional Bitmain units, resulting in government action beyond previous detainments. One company reported the seizure of $5 million worth of equipment and received a letter from CBP citing unauthorized communications gear and failure to meet FCC regulatory standards. Asian ASIC manufacturers are now facing customs clearance issues, including Bitmain. This development is significant as it affects how mining equipment enters and is distributed in the US. In Malaysia, an explosion led to the discovery of an illegal Bitcoin mining operation, adding to the country's ongoing problem with crypto-related power theft.
