India disconnects 20M phone numbers in ‘cyberslave’ crackdown

The Indian government is tightening security checks for SIM cards and disconnecting over 20 million mobile connections in response to growing reports of Indian citizens being enslaved in South East Asia for cybercrime and cryptocurrency fraud. It is believed that more than 29,000 Indians are trapped in countries such as Thailand, Cambodia, Myanmar, and Vietnam. These individuals are forced to scam their fellow citizens and engage in activities such as cryptocurrency fraud and identity theft. The Union Ministry of Telecommunications plans to block mobile handsets and disconnect connections associated with fraud or cybercrime, and tighter know-your-customer (KYC) checks will be implemented for SIM cards. The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre has received a significant number of cybercrime complaints originating from South East Asia, and the government is taking action to address this issue.
