Fake Coinbase scam lands Indian national in prison for 5 years

A 31-year-old Indian national, Chirag Tomar, has been sentenced to 60 months in prison for stealing over $20 million by creating fake websites mimicking the crypto exchange Coinbase. Tomar and his co-conspirators created fake URLs to deceive victims into thinking they were using the real Coinbase Pro exchange for trading in crypto. The scheme involved spoofing hundreds of victims worldwide and in the United States, with the fraudsters gaining access to valid Coinbase accounts through various methods such as phishing for 2FA codes and impersonating customer service representatives. Tomar used the stolen credentials to access victim accounts and move stolen crypto holdings to wallets controlled by him. He lived a lavish lifestyle, purchasing luxury cars and traveling to Dubai and Thailand. Tomar was arrested in December 2023 and pleaded guilty in May 2024 to wire fraud conspiracy.
