Bitcoin Developers Working With StarkWare, Blockstream Claim Breakthrough on Covenants

A group of Bitcoin developers has made a breakthrough on the Bitcoin blockchain without requiring changes to the underlying code. They have outlined a way of adding programming called "covenants," which would unlock new wallet and vault features as well as more efficient layer-2 protocols. The developers hope to achieve programmability similar to Ethereum while maintaining Bitcoin's strong security. The research paper detailing their findings, titled "ColliderScript: Covenants in Bitcoin via 160-bit hash collisions," was released on Thursday. While the current implementation may not be practical due to its cost, it is seen as an ingenious idea that could be optimized for practical use.
