Samourai Developers Appear Together In Court For First Time At Status Conference

Samourai Wallet developers Keonne Rodriguez and William Lonergan Hill appeared in court for a status conference in the Southern District of New York. The developers were charged by the US Department of Justice with money laundering and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. The prosecution provided batches of discovery to the defense, including business records and data extractions from seized devices. Rodriguez's attorney argued it was premature to set a trial date and that no evidence of an unlicensed money transmitting business had been found. Hill's attorney referenced a letter from Senators Cynthia Lummis and Ron Wyden to dismiss the charge, but the request was denied. The judge scheduled a follow-up hearing for December 17, 2024. Rodriguez's attorney requested modifications to his bail conditions, including removing home detention and modifying cryptocurrency transaction restrictions. The prosecution argued that home detention was necessary and cited evidence from Rodriguez's home indicating a potential escape plan. The judge did not allow for modifications to the bail conditions and urged both sides to move forward with the case.
