Russian Banks Baulk at Digital Ruble Implementation Costs

Russian banks, especially smaller ones, are concerned about the high integration costs associated with the central bank's digital ruble platform. The cost, ranging from $1.25 million to $2 million, is seen as prohibitive and exceeds the IT budgets of many smaller banks. The central bank has set different deadlines for different bank categories to offer digital ruble services, with smaller banks having the latest deadline in 2027. While the central bank is proceeding with the established timeframes, some experts believe that smaller banks may struggle and may even be forced to close due to the investment required without a clear return.
