Research: BTC ownership experienced a major shift in 2024, new users expected in 2025

A recent study by Bitcoin investment platform River has revealed a significant shift in Bitcoin ownership in 2024. The largest holders of BTC include Satoshi Nakamoto, companies like MicroStrategy and Tesla, BlackRock, "Bitcoin Whales," and various governments. The study found that four Bitcoin addresses held 100,000 to 1,000,000 BTC, followed by 93 large owners with 10,000 to 100,000 BTC. These addresses accounted for about 14% of the total supply of Bitcoin. Exchanges also held at least 12% of the supply on behalf of clients. The study also revealed that Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, held an estimated 968,452 BTC. Public companies collectively owned over 554,670 BTC, while private companies owned around 297,000 BTC. Governments worldwide held approximately 307,000 BTC. The study also found that crypto ownership had doubled since the end of 2021, with 28% of American adults owning cryptocurrencies. The research firm expects Bitcoin ownership rates to accelerate in 2025, with 14% of non-owners and 48% of people open to entering the crypto market. Bitcoin remained the most sought-after cryptocurrency, with two in three people wanting to purchase it as their crypto of choice.
