The Metropolis protocol, developed by Saga in collaboration with the AI-powered DAO ai16z, Virtuals, and Wayfinder, aims to create interconnected blockchains called "chainlets" that provide ideal environments for AI agents to interact and create new services. This protocol allows AI agents from different protocols to communicate and operate their own blockchain networks within Saga's infrastructure. The blockchain AI agent space has a current market capitalization of $29.2 billion, and more than one million new AI agents are expected to come online in 2025. However, there are risks involved, including the potential for autonomous AI agents to attempt to centralize control, exploit vulnerabilities, or rebel against their developers. Nevertheless, the AI+blockchain space continues to attract attention and investment. The Metropolis protocol uses Saga's chainlets, specialized layer-1 blockchains that operate independently and host smart contracts. Each chainlet runs only selected contracts to ensure consistent performance, and developers have full control over their app's environment without competing with other apps for resources.
