Japanese table tennis star Takumi Niwa, who won a bronze medal at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, has been arrested for allegedly participating in illegal online gambling using cryptocurrency. The athlete reportedly admitted to the charges during voluntary questioning and expressed remorse for his actions. Niwa is said to have used crypto assets to fund his gambling activities, bypassing traditional banking systems. His involvement was discovered during a police investigation into online casino payment agents and their users in Japan. The case highlights the increased scrutiny of crypto-related crimes by prosecutors in Japan.
