Japan police bust online gamblers for first time using crypto ‘tracking tool’

The Tokyo Metropolitan Police Department in Japan has begun actively arresting individuals who use overseas online casinos, using a crypto "tracking tool" to identify offenders. In the first such case in the country, 10 men and women, including a 35-year-old fire department worker, have been referred to the prosecutor's office. Since September, a total of 57 arrests have been made across 24 prefectures, with the intention to crack down on unauthorized gambling on foreign crypto casinos. This crackdown has raised questions about the state's priorities, as many individuals are struggling to survive in Japan's struggling economy. The move comes after recent cryptocurrency hacks in the country, leading to suspicion of state-approved money laundering activities.
