ISIS Crypto Fundraiser Mohammed Chhipa Faces 20 Years After Conviction in Virginia

Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa, a resident of Springfield, Virginia, has been convicted for providing material support to the terrorist organization ISIS. Chhipa raised funds between 2019 and 2022 to help female ISIS members in Syria, financing their escape from prison camps and supporting ISIS fighters. He collected funds through various means, including online social media accounts, and converted the money into cryptocurrency, which was then sent to Turkey and smuggled into Syria. Chhipa sent over $185,000 in cryptocurrency to support ISIS operations. He now faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison for each count. The case highlights the use of crypto by terrorist organizations for fundraising, but experts also emphasize that such activities represent a small portion of illicit crypto transactions, with traditional methods being the primary sources of funding for terrorism.
