Global Crypto Power Plays: Which Governments Are Hoarding the Most Bitcoin?

This article discusses the top five governments with the largest bitcoin holdings as of December 2024. The United States currently leads with 199,172 BTC confiscated from criminal cases, worth close to $20 billion. China's holdings are slightly behind the US, estimated to be 194,775 BTC confiscated from the Plustoken Ponzi scheme, valued at $19.4 billion. The United Kingdom holds 61,245 BTC seized in a money laundering case, valued at $6.11 billion. The Royal Government of Bhutan actively mines bitcoin and holds 12,211 BTC valued at $1.2 billion. El Salvador, as the first country to adopt bitcoin as legal tender, has steadily been adding to its holdings and now has 5,958 BTC worth $594 million. Apart from El Salvador and Bhutan, no other countries have publicly expressed interest in maintaining their own crypto reserves. It is also noted that private companies and exchange-traded funds control even larger bitcoin reserves.
