Crypto phishing losses drop to $43m in September: Scam Sniffer

In September, approximately $46 million was lost to cryptocurrency phishing scams, with 10,805 victims affected. While the number of victims increased, the amount stolen decreased compared to August's $63 million. One individual accounted for a majority of the losses, falling victim to an approval phishing scam. Overall, in Q3 of 2024, phishers managed to steal $127 million from an average of 11,000 victims per month. Another report noted that phishing was the most damaging attack vector in the quarter, with an estimated $343.1 million lost across 65 incidents. Fake social media accounts and dubious Google ads were the main methods used to trick victims into visiting phishing websites. It is important for users to be cautious and verify the authenticity of links they click on to protect themselves from these increasingly sophisticated schemes.
