Congress’s top priorities this lame duck session

Lawmakers in the lame duck session of the 118th Congress are focused on various priorities. Senate Democrats are working to approve as many of President Biden's judicial nominations as possible before losing their majority. An agreement has been reached to consider seven district court judges after Thanksgiving, with six more in December. In terms of government funding, a short-term extension was passed in September, and lawmakers must now decide whether to extend again or pass a full fiscal year spending bill. With the Republicans in power, another extension is considered more likely. There are rumors that former President Trump is considering recess appointments to get his cabinet picks through, although recent Supreme Court interpretation has made this more difficult. Speculation also suggests that the House could agree to recess, allowing Trump to use Constitutional powers to force the Senate to adjourn, but the feasibility of this scenario is uncertain.
