Austrian bust $1.3M ‘crypto’ fraud; phishing scam targets Ledger

A crime ring in Austria has been busted for defrauding over $1.2 million worth of digital assets and other valuables using fake cash. The scam, known as "Rip-Deal 2.0," involved the scammers purchasing digital assets with counterfeit money. The mastermind behind the operation, a 39-year-old Dutch man, is already serving a three-year sentence after being arrested earlier this year. Meanwhile, scammers are targeting users of hardware digital asset wallet Ledger with a phishing campaign. The fraudsters send spoofed emails claiming there has been a data breach and urging users to input their recovery phrases for "verification," ultimately resulting in the theft of their assets. Ledger reminded users that they never ask for recovery phrases and cautioned against falling for such scams.
