Russian Investigator Sentenced to 16 Years for Accepting $65M Bitcoin Bribe from Hackers

Former Russian investigator, Marat Tambiyev, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for accepting a bribe of 1,032 bitcoins worth around $65 million from hackers he was investigating. The bribe came from members of the Infraud Organization hacking group, and Tambiyev accepted it on the condition that the group's illegal assets would not be confiscated. Tambiyev claimed to have been set up and that his actions helped the state recover some funds. Another subordinate, Kristina Lyakhovenko, was sentenced to nine years in prison in connection with the same case. Russia, despite warming up to the crypto industry, has maintained a cautious stance and has conducted various investigations related to illicit use, including the recent arrest of nearly 100 suspected cybercriminals linked to the anonymous payment system UAPS and cryptocurrency exchange Cryptex.
