ISPs Targeted in Massive Info Stealing and Cryptomining Malware Campaign
Crypto hackers targeted over 4,000 internet service provider (ISP) addresses in Eastern Europe, focusing on ISPs in China and the West Coast of the U.S. The hackers used a masscan tool to scan and probe for open ports and credential brute-force attacks. Their objective was to deploy info-stealing software to steal cryptocurrency addresses and private keys, as well as install cryptocurrency mining malware to mine monero (XMR) using the host's hardware capabilities.
