Ethiopian Bitcoin mining gets 600MW boost as country signals support for industry

Ethiopia has become a growing hub for Bitcoin mining, with local miners currently consuming 600 MW of power and more capacity expected to come online this year. The country, which heavily relies on hydropower, is expected to add several hundred more megawatts of capacity to support its rapid expansion in the global mining market. Most mining operations in Ethiopia use mid-generation machines that are affordable and require less electricity. This move into Bitcoin mining aligns with Ethiopia's broader efforts to develop infrastructure for data mining and artificial intelligence training. The country's government has authorized and supported the development of the mining sector, attracting interest from miners seeking opportunities in regions with lower electricity costs.
