The US Treasury Department has disclosed that a recent data breach was caused by state-sponsored Chinese hackers. The breach occurred after a third-party software service provider, BeyondTrust, notified the department of a cybersecurity incident. Hackers with links to the Chinese government had gained access to a key used by BeyondTrust to provide technical support to Treasury Department employees. Using this key, the hackers infiltrated employees' workstations and accessed unclassified documents. The Treasury Department has sought the assistance of various agencies and experts to investigate the origin and impact of the attack. The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs denies any involvement in the data breach. The exploited BeyondTrust service has been closed, and it is believed that the hackers no longer have access to Treasury Department records. The Treasury Department plans to provide a classified briefing on the incident to staff members of the House Financial Services Committee.
