The US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has stated that the United States is willing to lift sanctions on Russia if all parties involved reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Rubio made the comments following a meeting with Russia's foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, in Saudi Arabia. The meeting marks the first formal diplomatic engagement between the two countries since Russia invaded Ukraine in January 2022. The US delegation also included Steve Witkoff and Mike Waltz, while Russia was represented by Lavrov, Yury Ushakov, and Kirill Dmitriev. Discussions between the two sides will continue, with separate teams of negotiators expected to begin contact on Ukraine in the future. The US-Russia meeting follows an announcement from former President Donald Trump that he had spoken to President Vladimir Putin about starting negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Trump and Putin are expected to have a meeting in Moscow to focus on restoring US-Russia ties.
