The U.S. government has announced that stolen bitcoin from the 2016 Bitfinex hack should be returned to the exchange. The bitcoin, worth $9.4 billion, will be sent back to Bitfinex. This comes shortly before Donald Trump's second term as president, during which he pledged to create a national strategic bitcoin stockpile. The U.S. currently holds 198,109 bitcoin, worth over $20.1 billion, which would be reduced to 103,466 BTC if the coins are returned to Bitfinex. There is also proposed legislation by Senator Cynthia Lummis to acquire 200,000 bitcoin per year for five years to create a strategic reserve of 1,000,000 bitcoin. The strategic bitcoin reserve is expected to be bullish for both the country and Bitcoin as a whole, potentially leading to a surge in price.
