The UK government is planning to ban public sector bodies from paying crypto ransomware payments to cyber criminals in order to make them less attractive targets. Private companies and victims of ransomware attacks would also be required to report every incident. The move comes as businesses paying ransomware attackers, often in cryptocurrency, are seen as inadvertently funding organized crime. In 2021, 13 ransomware incidents were identified as posing serious harm to essential services or the wider economy out of a total of 430 cyber incidents. The Security Minister emphasized the need to protect national security and disrupt criminal organizations involved in ransomware attacks.
