The T3 Financial Crime Unit, a collaboration between Tron, Tether, and TRM Labs, has frozen 100 million USDT used for illicit activities since its formation in September. The venture analyzed millions of transactions across the globe, monitoring a total volume of over 3 billion USDT. TRM Labs uses its blockchain intelligence tools to help identify and freeze USDT connected to illicit activities. Money laundering is the primary source of frozen funds, but other activities such as investment scams, drugs, terrorism financing, and hacks have also been targeted. Some of the frozen USDT had links to North Korea, which has been involved in infiltrating crypto projects for fundraising purposes. The T3 Financial Crime Unit hopes their efforts will deter bad actors from engaging in illicit activity on blockchains.
