Indian nationals are being lured with fake job offers promising high salaries, only to be trapped in cyber slavery and cryptocurrency fraud rings in Southeast Asia. Reports indicate that tens of thousands of Indians are coerced into participating in online scams, including cryptocurrency fraud, phishing scams, and pig butchering scams. The victims are often forced to impersonate law enforcement officials to extort funds from unsuspecting individuals back in India. Around 45% of cyber crimes targeting Indians originate from Southeast Asia. The Indian government has initiated rescue efforts to dismantle these networks and repatriate trapped citizens, collaborating with international organizations, NGOs, and local authorities. Telecom operators in India have been ordered to block international spoofed calls, monitor suspicious roaming activity in Southeast Asia, and disconnect compromised sim cards linked to the scams. Investigations have revealed potential links between these cyber scam networks and global human trafficking and exploitation rings. International authorities, including the U.S. Department of the Treasury, have taken action against individuals and entities involved in exploiting trafficked workers for crypto-related fraud.
