The Pennsylvania State Police have issued a warning about a new bitcoin scam targeting vulnerable individuals, especially seniors. Scammers are reaching out via email, phone, or other electronic means, claiming fraudulent activity involving the victim's personal information. Presenting themselves as representatives from the victim's financial institution, the scammers direct the victims to contact a fake investigator at a federal agency like the FBI or FTC. The victims are then instructed to withdraw large amounts of cash and deposit it into a bitcoin ATM to protect their funds. Once deposited, the scammers ask for a receipt or QR code scan, granting them access to the stolen funds, making recovery impossible. The scammers often use "spoofed" phone numbers, making it challenging for authorities to trace the crimes.
