According to South Korean Customs officials, drug smuggling has increased in the country due to the rise in the use of cryptocurrency. In 2023, authorities seized 769 kilograms of drugs, which is an 18% increase from the previous year. The Customs Service attributes this increase to the growing popularity of non-face-to-face transactions facilitated by digital currencies like Bitcoin. Officials found that drugs were being smuggled through international mail, express cargo, and by travelers. Dealers are reportedly using apps like Telegram to sell drugs and asking for payment in cryptocurrencies, making it more difficult for authorities to trace these transactions. Lawmakers are calling for stronger measures to address the growing drug problem in South Korea.
