In October 2024, six men allegedly kidnapped three family members and a nanny from a Chicago townhouse, forcing them to transfer $15 million worth of cryptocurrency before releasing them. The shocking five-day kidnapping, which involved the use of cryptocurrency wallets accessed during the crime, was outlined in a recently unsealed 44-page FBI affidavit. The victims were relatively well-treated during their captivity and were released near a dry cleaner after five days, where they arranged for transportation to a hospital. One suspect has been arrested, but others are believed to have fled to China, and $9 million of the stolen cryptocurrency remains unaccounted for. The FBI is continuing its investigation and working with international law enforcement to apprehend the remaining suspects and track the funds.
