Olga Skorobogatova, the key figure behind Russia's central bank digital currency (CBDC) initiative, has resigned from her role as first deputy governor of the Bank of Russia. Skorobogatova played a vital role in the digitalization of Russia's banking sector and led efforts on the development of the digital ruble, a state-controlled digital version of the Russian ruble. The reasons for her resignation are unclear. The head of the central bank, Elvira Nabiullina, praised Skorobogatova's strategic vision and the advancements made in Russia's payment infrastructure under her leadership. In September 2022, Skorobogatova was sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department for her involvement in facilitating Russia's attempts to bypass international sanctions.
