Former pharmaceutical executive Martin Shkreli is seeking to dismiss claims made by NFT collective PleasrDAO regarding the ownership of a rare Wu-Tang Clan recording. PleasrDAO had sued Shkreli in 2024, accusing him of illegally making and keeping copies of the album. Shkreli's filing argues that the claims should be dismissed as they are preempted by the Copyright Act. If the case proceeds, Shkreli wants two members of the Wu-Tang Clan to be included as they co-own the album. Shkreli initially purchased the album in 2015 for $2 million but it was seized in 2018 following his arrest. PleasrDAO later bought the album and planned to mint it into an NFT. Shkreli taunted PleasrDAO by playing the music and hosting listening parties. PleasrDAO alleges that this caused significant harm to the collective's investment. In August, Shkreli was ordered to hand over all copies of the album, but PleasrDAO is requesting further searches.
