According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), North Korean cyber actors known as "TraderTraitor" stole $308 million worth of Bitcoin from Japanese crypto firm DMM in May 2024. The attack was initiated by posing as a recruiter on LinkedIn and gaining unauthorized access to Ginco's systems. The FBI, along with the National Police Agency of Japan and the US Department of Defense, is conducting the investigation. DMM Bitcoin has announced it will go out of business after the theft. The crypto industry lost approximately $1.5 billion to hackers in 2024, a 17% decrease from the previous year. The FBI report highlights the risk of targeted social engineering and the coordinated efforts to counter North Korea's illicit activities. The decline in losses reflects improved security measures, with successful attacks decreasing by 27.5%.
