Prominent Supreme Court attorney Thomas Goldstein has been rearrested by a Maryland federal judge due to his involvement in a criminal tax evasion case related to concealing millions of dollars in cryptocurrency transactions from the IRS. Federal prosecutors argued that Goldstein showed a risk of flight given his connections to wealthy individuals. The prosecutors claim that Goldstein failed to disclose that he controls two unhosted crypto wallets and engaged in approximately 200 transactions in 2021, totaling over $8 million. The court filing also alleges that Goldstein attempted to influence a potential witness by offering cryptocurrency. Goldstein, known for co-founding SCOTUSblog, left the legal practice in 2023 after arguing in over 40 Supreme Court cases. The latest warrant reveals that Goldstein received over $8 million in crypto and sent over $6 million worth of crypto in the last five days, further suggesting an intent to flee. The court documents include conversations with a fixer where Goldstein arranged transactions and asked about the type of cryptocurrency used. Prosecutors argue that these conversations demonstrate Goldstein's intent to hide his transactions using crypto. Goldstein denies engaging in these transfers and claims the accounts are not his. A hearing for Goldstein's representation is scheduled for February 12.
