Former Prime Minister of Thailand, Thaksin Shinawatra, is proposing to establish Bitcoin as a key component of Phuket's tourism industry. He envisions Bitcoin being used as a payment method for both tourists and local businesses in a pilot program. Thaksin also predicts that Bitcoin could reach a value of $850,000. Industry leaders are supportive of the project but acknowledge the need to address issues such as price volatility, cybersecurity risks, and regulatory compliance. The central bank of Thailand currently prohibits the use of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies as payment tools, so cooperation between regulatory bodies is crucial for the project's success. The goal is not only to increase crypto acceptance but also to align Thailand with global trends in digital banking.
