An 81-year-old woman named Gladys Baxley claims to have lost her entire life savings, amounting to over $109,000, to a Social Security scam. Baxley received a phone call from someone posing as a representative of the Social Security Administration, followed by an email with a fake certificate from the "U.S. Supreme Court House" urging her to move her money for protection. She ultimately sent the funds to the scammers through multiple transactions, including withdrawing $15,000 in cash and mailing it via UPS. Baxley's sons argue that the bank should take responsibility for not questioning the large transactions and sending the money to illegitimate entities. However, Eagle Bank, Baxley's lender, maintains that it followed proper protocols and is working with her to recover the money. The FBI reports an 11% increase in scams targeting individuals over the age of 60 in 2022, amounting to $3.4 billion in losses.
