During the recent presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, neither candidate mentioned Bitcoin or cryptocurrency, disappointing bettors on the Polymarket prediction market platform who had wagered on such references. Traders had bet a total of $217,000 on Trump mentioning Bitcoin and $502,000 on Harris doing so. This is not the first time Polymarket bettors have lost money betting on Bitcoin or crypto mentions in debates; prior to a debate between Trump and Joe Biden in June, traders had bet $345,000 on a Trump reference. Despite the lack of political attention, the crypto industry has been investing heavily in the 2024 elections, supporting crypto-friendly candidates. Advocacy group Stand With Crypto had encouraged viewers to ask moderators to include a question about cryptocurrency in the debate. However, Bitcoin and crypto have yet to have a major political moment, apart from Trump's speech at the Bitcoin Conference in July.
