A Chinese public official named Wang has been sentenced to life imprisonment for selling state secrets to foreign entities to cover losses from his unsuccessful cryptocurrency investments. Wang, who was facing substantial debts, had sought part-time work online, unintentionally revealing his civil servant status. Foreign operatives contacted him and offered substantial payment in exchange for confidential information. Wang agreed and gradually leaked more sensitive information, eventually receiving over 1 million yuan in cryptocurrency. The People’s Court convicted him of espionage and stripped him of all political rights. The Ministry of State Security acknowledged the failure of Wang's unit to enforce proper confidentiality management systems and protective measures and has ordered corrective actions.
