The Bitcoin blockchain has released 94.42% of its total supply, leaving only 174,583.24 bitcoins to be mined until 20 million are in circulation. This milestone is expected to be reached before the fifth Bitcoin halving, projected to occur in April 2028. The commonly cited total supply of bitcoin is 21 million, but due to rounding errors in the protocol, the actual number destined to exist is approximately 20,999,999.97 BTC. The fifth block subsidy halving is estimated to occur on or around April 13, 2028, when the block subsidy will drop from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC per block. The 20 million BTC milestone is expected to be reached on or around March 12, 2026. This milestone marks a halfway point between the upcoming halving events and showcases the precision and scarcity engineered by Satoshi Nakamoto's design.
