Senator Elizabeth Warren has written a letter to Howard Lutnick, President Donald Trump's nominee for Commerce Secretary, demanding answers about his ties to stablecoin issuer Tether. Warren, who is known for her criticism of cryptocurrencies, wants Lutnick to disclose how much he and his firm, Cantor Fitzgerald, have invested in Tether and to provide information about any due diligence conducted before partnering with the company. She raises concerns about Tether's potential involvement in illicit transactions and frames it as a potential threat to national security. Cantor Fitzgerald has reportedly earned millions of dollars from managing Tether's reserves and also bought a minority stake in the company. Warren questions why Lutnick did not list Tether in his financial disclosure form and expresses doubt about his ability to serve without bias given his ties to the company. Tether, which has faced scrutiny for lack of transparency, is in the process of relocating its corporate headquarters to El Salvador.
